Kerrytown Bookfest 2013

The 11th Annual Kerrytown Bookfest of Ann Arbor was held on September 8 and the Michigan Letterpress Guild was there to share the letterpress love.

Phil Driscoll and Arie Koelewyn working the crowd.

Arie Koelewyn set the type and printed a bookmark for people to then complete with a sweet pink sheep on his Golding press while Phil Driscoll engaged visitors with information of the basics of letterpress printing using and showing some of the tools used.

Jim Horton printed a two color cover for a booklet of children's poetry which was then bound by volunteers and given gratis to Bookfest attendees.

Rumor has it that Jim Horton will be hosting the next Michigan Letterpress Guild meeting at boundedition so keep a look out in your mail box (the real one, not the virtual one) and the information will be here as well.

Spring 2013 Meeting

The Spring 2013 meeting of the

Michigan Letterpress Guild

will take place on May 11
at 1:00 p.m.
at the home and printshop of former member

John Moran

Muskegon, MI

John passed away this past Easter before we could set a date for a meeting where he planned to sell much of his extensive printshop to MLG members. His family has decided to go ahead with the meeting and the sale.

John had already arranged for the sale of his presses and the Ludlow and matrices, but there's still a large collection of type, a really nice paper cutter and all the other accoutrements found in a well used printshop.

Those of you who had the opportunity to visit John's shop saw first hand the lengths he went to see that everything was in tip-top shape. If you haven't, take our word for it: Everything is in A-1 condition. You don't want to miss this meeting!

Jim Horton announces boundedition

Introducing boundedition: a community book arts center offering classes in bookbinding, skill building workshops, exhibitions and access to emerging technologies in a vibrant open studio environment. From letterpress printing to laser cutting, boundedition provides avenues for creative expression and collaboration among a rich variety of artists, printers, craftsmen, designers, calligraphers and other folk who are passionate about exploring book and paper art and trades.

Located on the south side of Ann Arbor near the new Costco, boundedition's letterpress studio is managed by printer Jim Horton, who will be on hand to train and assist members. The letterpress studio features a full range of vintage presses and equipment.

Book artist Barbara Brown will lead the boundedition bookbinding program, sharing her expertise in alternative constructions, artist's books and bringing in guest instructors to inspire and educate. Collaborating with designer and maker Laura Earle, traditional techniques meet emerging technologies to generate new expressions in the book and paper arts. Product designer Tom Veling will mentor members with skill building workshops designed to foster specialized aspects of bookbinding and printing. Gene Alloway offers experienced perspectives on all things bibliophile.

Coming in May 2013, drop in for a session or join as a member.
